bye bilingual

i got so frustrated this afternoon when we had an s.o.s. come through from one of the support organizations i do phone counseling for. they needed a spanish speaker to talk to a woman right here in southeast texas. it nerves me that people do not bother to learn to speak english when they come to the united states. it nerves me even more that they aren't motivated to learn english because every sign is printed in both languages and every other public employee is bilingual. why learn english when we texans bend over backwards to accommodate spanish speakers? i know that if i went to germany or france or any other country in this world, there would be no backwards-bending for me. an extended stay would surely mean learning whatever language they speak. it just sucks when i can't even go to the convenience store without seeing a "basura" sign over the trash can.

A nation is defined by its borders, language, and culture.

And we are losing all three.
