Get a Life

Whether a hoax or not, it is rumored that some asshat(s) have scanned and posted all 700-something pages of the new Harry Potter book on the net. What gets me is the incredible amount of time it would take to do this...not so much that people are trying to get a jump on everyone else. Spoilers have been around since the beginning of time, after all.

But seven hundred pages, man! Unless you had some kind of professional equipment, think what you could do in the time it would take to scan seven-hundred pages. That's an all-day job, easy. I don't understand the motivation. I'd rather watch Oil, Sweat and Rigs marathons than scan seven-hundred pages of anything.

And just think if it leaked out that you are the one who did it! You'd have geeky Rowling fans (yes, it takes one to know one) keying your Prius and totally screwing with your cable connection! People take their Potter seriously, folks. Seriously.

Why do some people have to ruin everything for everyone else?

Asshats indeed.

There are book scanners that can turn pages. Google and some universities use them.

BTW, Google's long-term plan is to scan - "digitize" - every book in existence. You can see how that would piss off some authors and even moreso the paper-and-glue publishers.

But it makes the small authors happy. In digital form the small authors have equal footing with the well-known (and usually crappy) authors. Good material that would otherwise be ignored can more easily find eyeballs.

I'm glad that the asshats who "claimed" to do this really didn't. I got the book and the asshats were totally wrong...:) At least the ones I read about...

I don't really GET the whole Potter thing anyway. I liked the first book (the only one I read) very much, but the hype kills me. Hype over toys and books and other consumer products tends to make me run in the other direction every time.

On the other hand, the riches garnered by Ms. Rowling always cheer me. She, who was so down and out and poor once, is now one of the richest women in the world. THAT, I think, is cool.
