Token Love

So, am I the only one who thinks that these "tents" outside of grocery stores that will eventually house drive-thru floral arrangements are sad, sad things?

I love you so much that I took 30 seconds out of my day to swing by the tent outside of Kr0ger. It goes hand in hand with a drive-thru wedding. Wait...I can even see some of the fun that could come from a wedding in a car. The tent o flowers is still beyond me. And lets not even mention the fact that these flowers that are so briskly tossed at you as you slow down to 5 mph are marked up 300%. Yes, yesterday these flowers were $5.99. But since it's February 14th, your low cost is $79.99! (OK, that's more than 300%, but you get the picture)

I suppose my outrage just goes along with my whole opinion of Valentine's Day. It's a "Hallmark holiday." The women get entitled, the men get sweaty and the florists and candy companies get rich. Along with so many other things in modern society, V-Day has been taken over by materialism.

My husband asked me the other day what I wanted for Valentine's Day. I told him that I would be mad if he got me anything, and I meant it. Getting obligatory gifts is not my cup of tea, unless it's my birthday or Christmas. Punkin will be having her school party, so indulging in sweets and Spongebob Squarepants valentine cards will do me just fine.

So, what about you? What are your thoughts on Valentine's Day? Am I just a cynic?

Please see my current blog quiz. If you're a cynic, so am I. I also may be bitter. You didn't mention, in addition to the entitled women and sweaty men, that there are singles out here who feel more left out than usual. It's like we're being taunted with it all...

I hate Valentine's day. Not because I'm alone but because it's a forced holiday. Just like you said. If someone can't say I love you of their own accord and they need a holiday to show it...then they really need to think out their priorities. If someone is romantic...they don't need a holiday to show it and prove it. They prove it everyday. :)

I agree with you. My husband noticed yesterday that the ring he bought me for Christmas is on "sale" for 25% more than what he paid for it then.

I agree that V-Day is, like other holidays, completely commercialized and blown out of proportion. And if it's the only day someone makes an effort to show their love for someone, well shame on them.

However, it can be a nice occasion to celebrate love - love for ANYONE, even a family member or best friend.

Just my two-cents.

So that's what those tents are for? Don't forget the Vermont Teddybear guilt commercials.

The secret was on Oprah yesterday! I seriously need that DVD. :)

The Vermont Teddybears freak me out.

Chalk me up as a cynic too. We don't celebrate. I would be mad if that were the only day of the year my hubby would buy me flowers.

It is the prerogative of women to be Valentines Day Cynics. Men who are Valentines Day Cynics are otherwise known as 'Sorry Cheap Bastards.'

I always write my wife a poem and bring her daisies on Valentines Day. No body's getting rich off of me, but doesn't mean I can't still represent.

Not to mention that the holiday commemorates the day Saint Valentine was hanged.
