Free At Last

Today, we officially handed over the keys (and the title) to the old house to its new owners. Well, to the new owners' agent anyway. It struck me how ludicrous the whole ritual was...sign here, initial there, look at some numbers neatly typed out on a couple of forms, hand over the keys. Really, nothing happened.

A client told me once that she had always thought about money as "numbers on paper" and today really proved that she was right. Think about it - your bank accounts are balanced with numbers on paper (or a computer screen), you buy things with a little plastic card or a piece of paper (a check or cash) and you accept the same when selling something. We really could be using pooka shells - it just so happened that our forefathers settled on paper.

In any case, our albatross has flown away. I'm glad it's over with, but I do feel a little sad when I think of someone else living in our house. Funny how we get attached to things sometimes.

We've been trying to sell our house since October - the slowest season for selling homes, I know. Things are finally beginning to pick up as far as showings, but I long for the day we get an offer and can get rid of *our* albatross (which I have been calling it for a couple of months now!).

It's all about wacky numbers. That's why every so often, I get cash to spend at Taco Bell, just so I know it is real money.

Best of luck in your new home.

I'm sure it feels a bit funny, turning over the keys to your old home. Just think: you get to keep the memories and they get the mortgage!

I'll send some good vibes your way, Sis! Visualize the end result...

Thanks for the well-wishes, Cassie.

Cheryl: GOOD POINT!! =)

Creech: I do the same thing - and it feels weird to actually have cash!

I felt bitterness for a full year after selling my house. My first beef was when the new owners tore up the perennial garden I had been tending for 7 years -- some of the plants were 15 years old. Bastards!
