what happens when i read the news

i have to admit, there are not a whole heck of a lot of things that i feel strongly about. most goings on in the world pass me by on a day-to-day basis while i coast on my wave of sheltered ignorance, contentedly reading happynews.com. i used to stick my nose into other people's business without an invitation and had a thirst for wanting to know-it-all. i took everything i heard or read as gospel and preached it as well. i guess i realized the futility and basic silliness of that practice as i got older (and hopefully a bit wiser).

i had to break my news fast today. as someone who has made part of her life's work to educate as many as possible about mood disorders experienced postnatally, how could i ignore the andrea yates retrial? it's been just over 5 years since she methodically drowned her children, one by one, to fulfill a psychotic prophecy that would require her execution under the hand of governor george bush (who incidentally was not even the governor at the time) so that her children would be saved to heaven and satan would be destroyed forever. yeah, let's put her in prison. she was obviously stable and knew exactly what she was doing - in this universe.

and isn't it nice that her ex-husband took the time to show up? was that his new wife there with him? that must have been comfortable for her. but it's not about her, is it? in fact, sometimes i'm not sure who it's about.

before i could surf away, i read something about illegal immigrants getting access to social security benefits. please someone, tell me this is not true! if illegals are getting what was meant for united states citizens, then this country is no longer a country. the "united states" would just be some land in between mexico and canada. i remember what it was like to feel patriotic. i remember what it was like to thank God that i was born here. and i still feel pretty darn blessed. but my sense of country is getting lost...kind of like the ideas on which this united states was founded.

have a nice day.

Don't get me started on the illegals. Now there won't be any SS bennies when we are older and the government is wanting to give the illegals bennies???? Wonder if Canada has closed it's borders yet? *eyeballing the move...*

I agree of course about the outrage of illegals getting Social. I really think the tides of humanity and history have little to do with what this or that effete president or clan of corrupt congresspeople might think to say.

We're history's test. I think for America to be America has to either draw the line or just abandon itself. We'll see.
