sometimes, the school's policy floors me with its stupidity. the "official" first day of the semester was monday, january 16th. but wait! wasn't i at home sitting on my butt that day? that's right - it was mlk day! so i suppose those lucky profs with tuesday classes got to see the bright eyes and bushy tails of those who made it in for the real first day of class. fortunately, my classes are only on mondays and wednesdays, so today was the first time i saw this semester's victims students.
i had a great time with them today! i purposely dressed down in a plain black t-shirt, jeans, a gray hoodie and tennis shoes and sat in the back of the class while everyone was filing in. when it was about 5 minutes past the class's start time, i asked someone what time it was. when they told me, i got up and said, "i guess we can go ahead and start then." you should have seen all the jaws drop! a few of them said "you're the teacher?" i love messing with people's heads.
my first class is pretty big - about 30 students. the second one is ideal - about 18 in the class. in fact, we finished up with the icebreaker stuff early in the smaller class and then got into a great discussion about passing judgements and stereotypes. it should be a good semester - at least i am hopeful.

Clever tactic! I'm going to start looking in the back of every room I walk into today.
