maybe i am just clueless, but i am flabbergasted at the complete mayhem that is going on around me. the captain and i were talking this morning about it and i bet him a hypothetical sum of money that someone in our neighborhood had already boarded up their house. sure enough, this morning at the bus stop, one of the moms told me that her next door neighbor had already put the plywood up. now, we're getting notifications of school closures all around us, though classes at punkin's school and the college i teach at haven't been canceled as of this moment.
punkin and i went to the grocery store earlier and they were completely out of bottled water! the only kind they had left was the flavored kind, which is the kind we drink anyway. we have a couple of 5 gallon jugs from our water delivery service. our friends told us that they had to drive to a l0we's 30 minutes away to even find plywood for their 17 windows. my (fabulous) mother-in-law called today to make sure we were coming up there. i didn't know what to say.
right now, rita is expected to make landfall about 100 miles southwest of us sometime late friday or early saturday. we will probably still get a lot of wind and rain. but i just can't seem to feel any urgency about the situation. freaking out or worrying will not accomplish anything. i just wish everyone around me would calm down! i want to give the neighborhood one big "get ahold of yourself" slap in the face. i mean - we should be having a hurricane party, not a frenzy! let's drink beer tonight and board up the windows tomorrow.
