racism

happy mlk day. no classes today. sweet! but whatever happened to getting president's day off? i distinctly remember getting that day off in the past. are our founding fathers and past and current presidents less important than one man now?

i call all of this "racism" mainly because it is. mlk day is just one example. how about black history month? how about juneteenth? how about hispanic heritage month? fine. one should know about where they came from and learn from their ancestors. but what if someone decided to have white history month? can you even imagine the uproar?

my father's family came over to the u.s. on a boat from portugal. they came here because life over there sucked. once they settled in new england, they immediately became ostracized and called names because they were from a foreign country. that must have been a total bummer for them. but i am honestly not bitter towards anyone because of what they went through. it's because of their hardships that i have the opportunities that i have today. how is that different from anybody else in this country?

martin luther king, jr. was all about equality and social justice. it's too bad some people take his message to the extreme side of the spectrum.
