Shoulda Coulda Woulda

I am having an interesting dialogue with myself lately. I am beating myself up for not being busier. I have always had too many things on my "to do" list and have wished for a time when there was nothing pressing for me to deal with. Now that time is here and I am still dissatisfied!

I just read a DailyOM that was about being happy with what you have now. There's nothing standing in the way of that happiness except these thoughts that I have that I should be...busier, more productive, more useful, etc. I am a big advocate of stomping those "should" thoughts out because there's nothing that any of us should be doing, saying, thinking or feeling. Whatever your experience is right now is what it "should" be.

Even if just for today, I am going to be grateful for this slow time...for lazy mornings spent in pajamas...for being able to "play it by ear"...for being able to be spontaneous. Yeah, you wish you had these problems!!

Um, if you'd like to be busier, I could give you a list of things you could do for me. You know, if it would make you more content with life or something. Completely selfless of me.

I should be stomping out my should-bes. Damn, that's one more thing I should be doing!

I half agree. We shouldn't get caught up in what we "should" be doing. However, that's a long way from saying, "whatever your experience is," is what it should be.

That's too deterministic for my comfort.

I prefer just enough guilt to keep me on the straight and narrow. The rest is just loose change.

I get the "I should be..." guilt, too. Like right now, at noon on Sunday, I should be doing laundry and cleaning my house instead of sitting at the computer in my pajamas drinking hot tea and reading blogs....

Oh well. The laundry isn't going anywhere. The cleaning will get done. I'm basking in the moment. Thank you!
