Strings of Things

During the school year, I often wished for the summer. Sleeping past 6am, lying in bed watching TV, working in pajamas. Now it is here, and I catch myself feeling guilty for doing these things. Sometimes my own thought process seems alien to me.

It also makes me think about how unimportant "what I want" can be. For example, say you really want a new car [insert make and model here]. You think about it, dream about it, and work towards it. After a while, you are in a position to make the purchase. You finally drive the car off of the lot. How long after that are you truly happy?

I think having goals is a fine thing. But I also think that we are fooling ourselves if we think that the attainment of those goals is going to be the end of our desires. Life is a long string of wanting and attaining (or not). I don't think you ever get to a point where you just feel satisfied with everything...the end.

It seems that life would be awfully dull without something to look toward. But those things, in themselves, are really not as awesome as we can make them out to be.

Well said Tigger. Life is about the journey. Always another step to look forward to.

It's true. Your last two sentences really sum it up. When I'm feeling crappy about things, sometimes I think about the person I was (and the position I was in) 2 or so years ago. I think about how much that person wanted all the things I have now. It helps put things in perspective.

Buying the house really has seemed to make me happier, though. Six months later and I still love it (and all it represents) and have been less snarky in general. It seems to be the best relationship I've ever had...

This is so, so true. The only thing that can fill that big empty hole in yourself is God. Everything here on Earth is temporary and loses its luster in time. I guess the key is to enjoy what we are blessed with, but don't think that anything is going to make us happy forever and ever. No car, house, TV, computer, whatever can do that.
