"thoughts become things"

have you ever become obsessed by something that seemed kinda stupid at the time? for example, you are watching qvc and see some "wonder mop" and just have to have it. it is too expensive to buy, but you can't get it out of your head. you walk around, thinking about the mop...picturing yourself using it and being happy with the results. you surf the net, looking around for a better price, etc.

have you ever been obsessed like that?

i have. i was obsessed with getting punkin a toddler bed when she was 2. i have no clue why. the crib we had for her was even convertible - it could be turned into a day bed and then a full-size bed. but one day, i saw a friend's child's room with a toddler bed in it...and just had to have one.

i looked at furniture store ads, went to places like babies r us, and looked on-line. i couldn't justify the price in my head because we didn't need this thing. after a while, it became clear that i could afford to pay $0 for the toddler bed. but i couldn't let it go.

a couple of weeks later, i was looking at the advertising board at church. someone had written an ad on a 3x5 index card and placed it down near the bottom. it read: giving away white toddler bed, no mattress. excellent condition! you pick it up. so i did. it was perfect! the mattress from the crib fit just right in it. punkin loved it so much that she slept in it that same night.

the toddler bed did not change our lives in a drastic way. as far as i know, no one was healed of cancer because we got the toddler bed. warring nations did not find peace because of it. however, it is one of the best examples thus far in my life of thoughts become things. i'm looking forward to having better examples in the near future!
