a treasure trove of useless knowledge

one of my favorite things to do is read. the book currently on my nightstand is called a salty piece of land, written by jimmy buffet (yes, that jimmy buffet). it's fiction, though i have to keep reminding myself of that fact. the story is something that i could picture jimmy buffet (or at least his public persona) doing. he's quite the storyteller in this, and in the several other published works to his credit. some day, i'd like to sit on a beach and write for a living. though i can't hold a tune and don't have fans called "parrotheads." i'll find some other way.

the books i read are generally not "classics," though i have read the standards in school. i did read ayn rand's the fountainhead by choice once - and that's not light reading. my reading list usually gets chosen for me at random by friends or family members who have read something, liked it, and passed it on to me. the buffet book comes from my dad. before that, i was reading the lovely bones by alice sebold, but it was too creepy to read before bed. nightmares, you know. i figure i can read it on the plane when we fly to new york city this friday.

come to think of it, i read just about everything i can get my hands on. in the bathroom, if i don't have a magazine, i will read hairspray cans, lotion bottles or whatever else is in reach. the most beneficial thing about reading so much is that i end up with a little bit of knowledge about a lot of different subjects. sometimes, i come off as a know-it-all in conversation, but that only happens if the person i am talking to doesn't know me. my real friends know that i am full of crap and if they press the subject, i will undoubtedly reach my limit and proceed to the blank stare.

yet, they still love me. go figure.

I enjoyed "The Lovely Bones" and you even commented on that:

I hope you like it and it helps the flight breeze by. When you're here, I'll let you check out the "Pick Me Up" galley. I think you'll like it...it's right up our inner geeky kid alley. Maybe I'll even get another free copy of it for you to take home.

I always thought I was the only one who read shampoo bottles, soap boxes, etc. in bathrooms. Now I know differently. My problem is that i often don't remember what I have read but know that I read "something about the topic somewhere" and just can't access it from my brain. It drives me crazy.

I left my bathroom book in the bedroom today.

However, I can now tell you the exact method to insert a tampon, step by step.

I will read anything in sight in there!

omg no captcha! Thank you!

You should have read "The Fountainhead" in the john for more perfect irony.

I'm so impressed you read The Fountainhead! I tried so hard to get into that several years ago. Had a younger (woohoo!) boyfriend in college who worshiped Ayn Rand. I could never figure either of them out.

Do you think there are a secret army of us out there that read product boxes, cans, etc.? Or could it be that "we people" tend to have other things in common?

Love to read YOUR stuff, though!
