it has begun. the grades war. today, punkin's class had 2 tests - one over asia and one over martin luther king, jr. punkin came home with a sad face, saying she had gotten an a- on one test and a b- on the other. when i asked her why she was sad, she said "[her classmate] got a+ on both of her tests! i don't want you to think that she is better than me!"
i vividly remember the hooplah that my parents made about grades. i got $5 for every "a" that i brought home in high school and "c's" were completely unacceptable. that policy made me a very anxious and uptight teenager. of course i'd like punkin to make all "a's." but as long as she's doing the best that she can, i am not going to get angry. if she starts getting lazy, that's another story. but the last thing i want my 5-year-old to be worrying about right now is a stupid grade. there will be plenty of time for that when she is older.
what is your policy on grades? or if you don't have kids, what did your parents require of you grade-wise?
