I fall silent when I am hurt by someone's words and don't know how to respond. Or can't express it without hurting back, or afraid to continue the discussion for fear of arousing ire and starting an argument, and therefore prefer not to say anything at all. As far as holding back praise etc., that just doesn't happen. I think one of the things I do best (warning: modesty ensues) is to find something nice to say about someone ALL THE TIME, and give praise and support wherever and whenever possible.
